2018 Hyundai Kona vs. Its Competition

If style is a priority, the Jeep Renegade is a natural competitor.

It’s the only other quirky pick on the list.

Its interior feels a little cheap, but the Jeep is ready for rugged trails more than the Kona.

Same goes for the Crosstrek: it’s slow like the base Kona, and its interior is a little less zesty than the Kona’s, but it’s more durable than the Jeep’s.

The Ford Ecosport and Chevrolet Trax may appeal to traditional buyers, but we advise branching beyond the Ford/GM tree—there are better picks out there.

The CX-3 is another stilted wagon, but it’s more cramped than the Kona.

The 2018 Honda HR-V should be high on any compact crossover buyer's shopping list due to its efficient space and engine.

Quick Specs
5.8
The 2018 Hyundai Kona compact crossover SUV uses its space—and your money—wisely.
5.7
The 2018 Chevrolet Trax, Chevy’s smallest utility vehicle, is straightforward: it’s plain on the outside but practical inside, not particularly fast but adequately fuel-efficient.
5.2
The 2018 Ford EcoSport offers up cabin space and a low base price, but other Ford SUVs present a better value.
5.5
The 2018 Jeep Renegade mounts a spirited defense of its brand bona fides, but delivers a less convincing impression of a great economy car.
6.3
The 2018 Mazda CX-3 is an attractive small crossover pick thanks to its good looks. We’d ask for more room, but fear that would spoil the CX-3’s low price.
7.2
The 2018 Subaru Crosstrek smooths over the edges that we didn’t like with the last version. It’s smooth, quiet, and capable—all good things because it won’t be rushed.
