2018 Hyundai Accent vs. Its Competition

The Honda Fit is our pick in the small-car niche because it drives well enough and doubles as a pint-sized minivan, thanks to its flip-up, fold-down rear seats.

The Chevy Sonic has been something of a driver’s car in this segment, as has the Ford Fiesta, but compromises abound, especially inside the Fiesta’s borderline inhospitable interior.

Still, a Fiesta ST? Sign us up.

The Nissan Versa likely will be the most affordable new car in America this year, although we’d hardly recommend anyone taking them up on that offer.

The Toyota Yaris is dismal as a hatch but much better as the Yaris iA sedan, even though it’s plenty pricey.

Then there’s the Kia Rio, a mechanical twin to the Accent that lacks a fair amount of equipment when compared model to model.

Quick Specs
5.4
The 2018 Hyundai Accent clouds the new-or-used question, but only in well-equipped Limited trim.
6.0
The 2018 Chevrolet Sonic remains a good choice among subcompacts, though it’s now aging and losing some luster.
4.3
The teensy 2018 Ford Fiesta lives its best life as a scintillating turbo-4 ST.
6.0
The 2018 Honda Fit spaces out when it comes to economy-car goodness.
3.8
The Nissan Versa is affordable transportation that has an appealing price—especially for students. It’s not quick but it is spacious, especially in hatchback form.
6.0
The 2018 Toyota Yaris is two cars: a fun-to-drive sedan called the "iA," and a hatchback relic that's hard to recommend. Four doors=four thumbs up.
