2018 Honda Clarity vs. Its Competition

2018 Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid drive, Napa Valley, Caifornia, Dec 2017

The competitors for the various Honda Clarity versions are diverse, but the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid is the only one distributed nationally, and its main competitors are likely the BMW i3 Rex, the Chevrolet Volt, and the Toyota Prius Prime.

They offer 97, 53, or 25 miles of rated electric range, respectively, but none of the three is a five-seat mid-size sedan—a major point in Honda’s favor.

All are effectively compact four-seat hatchbacks, and the Clarity with its 47 miles of range is larger, more spacious, and more comfortable.

With a disappointing 93 miles of range, the Clarity Electric is overshadowed by the 238-mile Chevrolet Bolt EV, though it too is a compact five-door hatchback.

The Tesla Model 3 might be another competitor, but it won’t be readily available for another year at least.

Finally, the Toyota Mirai is the main competitor for the Clarity Fuel Cell, and here the Honda shines: it’s larger, more comfortable, notably quieter, and has a longer range.
