The Toyota Corolla has traditionally been the Civic's rival, but in recent redesigns the Corolla has become larger and less sporty.

For those who enjoy driving, the Mazda3 is still the best handling choice in this class, and though its powertrain isn’t quite as great as the one in the Civic, it’s fast.

Yet another good choice is the new Kia Forte; it’s certainly more enjoyable to drive than the soft Corolla, without giving up much if any refinement.

The Hyundai Elantra has been redesigned this year, with 40-mpg highway fuel-efficiency and improvements in comfort and refinement.

And as we write this, the 2012 Ford Focus will soon be reaching dealerships; it's completely new and much improved, with responsive handling, excellent tech equipment, and a more refined ride and interior than most in this class.

Quick Specs
The 2011 Honda Civic is still a standout for its perky driving feel and responsiveness, but in most other respects it's no longer so impressive.
With the 2012 Focus, Ford shows that small cars don't have to feel so banal, with charismatic compacts that are more satisfying to drive, more luxurious, and better-equipped.
38 mpg; a sleek, sophisticated look; and even more value for the money confirm that this little sedan has officially left the Corolla in the dust.
The 2011 Kia Forte exemplifies the new direction of Kia, with a simple, elegant style, unexpected levels of refinement, and lots of value for the money.
The 2011 Mazda3 provides more driving enjoyment than most other small-car models, along with a stylish, racy look; but with a tight, noisy cabin, it’s not without compromise.
The 2011 Toyota Corolla is spacious, safe, and well-equipped; but if you're looking for excitement or inspiration, it's not here.
