The compact-car segment is readying for another round of major change over the next year or so, as all-new versions of the Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Civic, and Hyundai Elantra (as well as the Kia Forte) are headed into full redesigns.

The Ford Focus, along with the Mazda 3, are the models that best combine sporty driving attributes with the more sophisticated, upscale interiors, however—and that's definitely put on the pressure for the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic and some of the traditional high-value small car nameplates.

The 2016 Honda Civic gains a new 1.5-liter turbocharged engine option, as well as a far more refined interior and some sportier driving attributes.

Meanwhile the Hyundai Elantra and Kia Forte, in their current generations, continue to offer upscale interiors, impressive feature sets for the money, and decent comfort.

The Chevrolet Cruze is the pick for the more comfort-minded compact-car shoppers; its interior is very impressive, as are its ride and handling attributes.

And the Dodge Dart is an interesting rival that's packaged differently than all the rest—more like a smallish mid-size sedan, really, although lacking some of the edginess it teases on the outside.

Quick Specs
From efficiency-minded models to the high-performance ST, the 2016 Ford Focus remains one of the best-driving small cars on the market.
The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze inches closer to mid-size, while growing lighter, leaner, and more fuel-efficient.
The 2016 Dodge Dart offers great styling, spacious interior, and good equipment set; but not all versions live up to the sporty performance (or good gas mileage) that the design might suggest.
The 2016 Honda Civic drops almost all the economy-car pretense; in Touring trim, it could easily wear a premium label.
Not quite a hot hatch, the 2016 Hyundai Elantra GT gives up some rear-seat space in the name of cargo room and European style.
The 2016 Mazda 3 is one of the best-driving and best-looking small cars, with a more premium feel than its (now even lower) price might suggest.
