The list of competitors for the Expedition includes some of the most popular full-size SUVs, and a pair of newcomers.
GM's Chevy Tahoe, Suburban and GMC Yukon utes have the edge on the Expedition in terms of interior trim quality, engine choices including a Hybrid, and more responsive steering, but the Expedition trumps them with more third-row seat space.
The Toyota Sequoia and Nissan Armada tackle the domestic utes with a half-step up in size: they're bigger than the standard Expedition, smaller than the long-wheelbase Expedition EL.
The Sequoia has Toyota's fabulously smooth V-8 powertrains underhood, and very high towing figures, as does the Armada--which has a less rich interior, but a ballsy, NASCAR-ish engine note to go with its vast interior room.

If you're one of the few SUV fans left standing in the full-size arena, the 2012 Ford Expedition offers truck toughness in a well-rounded, well-featured SUV package. |
Old-school, mostly in the right ways, the Chevrolet Suburban's survived the big-SUV shakeout for a reason. |
The 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe is no longer fresh-faced, but it remains one of the best bets for those needing tough, true truck capability and plenty of passenger space. |
The 2012 GMC Yukon–in Hybrid Denali form especially–makes a strong argument that there's still very much a place in today's market for big, capable, and supremely comfortable body-on-frame SUVs. |
It's lacking in some features and its interior is a bit cheap, but the 2012 Nissan Armada has rugged good looks and a beefy V-8 powertrain. |
The 2012 Toyota Sequoia delivers traditional truck toughness, towing ability, and strong V-8 engines—plus the macho look to go with it. |
