2014 Ford Edge vs. Its Competition

2014 Ford Edge Sport
Martin Padgett Martin Padgett Editorial Director

The Ford Edge is a half-size larger than compact crossovers like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, and it has a more refined ride than those models.

Yet with its 30-mpg highway rating in EcoBoost form, it's a viable alternative to those models.

With five seats and available all-wheel drive, it draws from a wide range of models.

The Chevy Equinox has a four-cylinder model with a 32-mpg highway rating; it's nciely styled and trimmed, with good packaging that includes a sliding second-row seat.

The Nissan Murano and Toyota Venza have comparable interior appointments and are both stylish entries like the Edge.

The latest Explorer has seven seats, but the third row's a little smaller than some; it has some of the same powertrains as the Edge but adds a turbocharged V-6 this year in a Sport model that's an SHO in all but name.

With an EPA-estimated 33 mpg highway, the Ford Escape is a little smaller than the Edge but a stylish, tech-loaded alternative for those who don't need as much space.

Quick Specs
An exceptionally comfortable interior, great connectivity, and a 30-mpg turbo model succeed in elevating the 2014 Ford Edge above the crossover clutter.
The 2014 Chevrolet Equinox is every bit as solid, spacious, and well-equipped as cost-conscious families could expect -- and far more quiet and refined than many other models without a luxury badge.
With authentically athletic looks and performance balancing out good passenger space, cargo versatility, and loads of high-tech features, the 2014 Ford Escape is attractive to a wide range of buyers.
The 2014 Ford Explorer does build on its heritage, but on-road fluency and passenger comfort are clearly at center stage.
The 2014 Nissan Murano is stylish and refined, but lacks some of the space and efficiency found in competitors.
If you don't need a rugged SUV, the 2014 Toyota Venza is a practical, even stylish alternative with some strong wagon and hatchback leanings.
