2017 FIAT 500X vs. Its Competition

2017 Fiat 500X
Andrew Ganz Andrew Ganz Senior Editor

Pint-size crossovers are all the rage at the moment, but that doesn't mean Fiat is late to the party.

The Chevrolet Trax and the Buick Encore are essentially the same vehicle underneath, although the Buick's interior is a nicer place to spend time.

The Mazda CX-3 is decidedly tight inside, but it offers the best driving dynamics in its class.

The Honda HR-V is also quite small, but delivers a full dose of traditional Honda virtues and it drives very well.

Then there's the Jeep Renegade, which is built alongside the 500X.

The two are essentially identical underneath, but the Fiat is a little more fun to drive and the Jeep can crawl up a dirt road a little better.

Quick Specs
6.5
With more personality than most small crossovers, the Fiat 500X is definitely worth a look.
6.5
The 2017 Buick Encore reaches for the compact-luxury stars, but it falls shy on styling and front-seat space.
5.8
The 2017 Chevrolet Trax may lack power and style, but it's a smart package for city dwellers thanks to a useful hatchback shape, thrifty fuel economy, and a low price.
6.8
Think of the 2017 Honda HR-V as a Fit with all-wheel drive and a little more headroom. It's not as fun as it could be, but it makes a lot of sense.
5.3
The 2017 Jeep Renegade is the smallest Jeep you can buy, appealing both to commuters and off-roaders, but its design can outshine its performance.
7.2
The 2017 Mazda CX-3 keeps the most attractive features from last year: its price and its handling.
