2018 FIAT 500 vs. Its Competition

2018 Fiat 500
Aaron Cole Aaron Cole Managing Editor

The Fiat 500 competes in a class of small cars that’s seemingly split.

Some are bare bones transportation (Ford Fiesta and Honda Fit) and others offer flair, at a price.

The Volkswagen Beetle is the natural competitor to the 500, and both are similarly aged.

The Volkswagen is more livable but lacks the fun of the 500 Abarth.

The Mini Cooper is more complete—it has a better interior and more powertrain varieties, but it can easily crest $30,000 in many configurations.

The Ford Fiesta is old and suffers from inattention but can be inexpensive in base versions.

The Honda Fit is the most flexible and usable, although it’s not as fun as it used to be.

The Smart Fortwo is electric only this year, and its range and price make it difficult to recommend.

Quick Specs
The 2018 Fiat 500 packs more punch this year, but it’s still a statement of style over some substance.
The teensy 2018 Ford Fiesta lives its best life as a scintillating turbo-4 ST.
The 2018 Honda Fit spaces out when it comes to economy-car goodness.
The 2018 Volkswagen Beetle is a competent small car that’s showing its age. The same could be said for every other Beetle on the road and that hasn’t stopped it yet, has it?
The 2018 Mini Cooper is an icon made better by nimble handling and infinite customization.
The 2018 Smart ForTwo, now sold only as an electric vehicle, remains the easiest car in the U.S. to park on crowded streets—and low battery range will keep it mostly urban anyway.
