If you want to go big, you can't get much bigger than the Suburban.
Ford's Expedition EL is almost the Suburban's equal when it comes to interior space and the Ford's power-folding third-row seat is by far superior; but its engine remains behind that of the Suburban.
Nissan's Armada finds its motivation from a similarly strong V-8 (and the thirst that comes with it), but offbeat styling and too much plasticky trim inside can be turnoffs.
Toyota's Sequoia is the most disappointing in this group; while it borrows the Tundra pickup's strong V-8 and macho looks, its interior appointments and handling are below the group's high water mark.
And of course, the Suburban's intra-GM rivals are on the radar, too.
The GMC Yukon XL and Cadillac Escalade ESV are virtually identical to the Suburban but more pricey; the ESV starts about where the Suburban LTZ leaves off, but carries the Caddy cachet.
