2014 Chevrolet Suburban vs. Its Competition

If you want to go big, you can't get much bigger than the Suburban.

Ford's Expedition EL is almost the Suburban's equal when it comes to interior space and the Ford's power-folding third-row seat is by far superior; but its engine remains behind that of the Suburban.

Nissan's Armada finds its motivation from a similarly strong V-8 (and the thirst that comes with it), but offbeat styling and too much plasticky trim inside can be turnoffs.

Toyota's Sequoia is the most disappointing in this group; while it borrows the Tundra pickup's strong V-8 and macho looks, its interior appointments and handling are below the group's high water mark.

And of course, the Suburban's intra-GM rivals are on the radar, too.

The GMC Yukon XL and Cadillac Escalade ESV are virtually identical to the Suburban but more pricey; the ESV starts about where the Suburban LTZ leaves off, but carries the Caddy cachet.

Quick Specs
Plain but purposeful, the 2014 Chevy Suburban puts full-size SUV tradition to the foreground.
The 2014 Cadillac Escalade remains one of the brawniest, most luxurious large SUVs, although some shoppers will be left wanting more modern interfaces inside.
It hasn't been brought up to date like the company's pickup trucks, but the Ford Expedition has one of the best cabins and designs among the biggest SUVs.
Full-size SUVs still have a niche in the world, and the GMC Yukon is one of the best for towing and hauling it all.
The 2014 Nissan Armada has grown old in a segment that has improved its technology, safety, features and fuel economy.
The 2014 Toyota Sequoia has room for eight and strong V-8 towing capacity, but it's pretty thirsty and difficult to maneuver to drive every day.
