The Dodge Charger SRT8 is probably the most direct rival to the Chevrolet SS.
The huge, 470-horsepower, 6.4-liter V-8 in the SRT8 is breathtaking, and the Charger is a very comfortable car; but it's hardly lean and balanced when the corners get tighter and less predictable.
The Ford Taurus SHO is a completely different kind of car, packing a turbocharged V-6 with all-wheel drive.
It's a big comfortable car, and while it's probably not in the same league as the SS for performance, it drives much better than you might expect.
The Infiniti M56 is another rival in performance; it's a bit more of a luxury car, with beautiful, plush cabin appointments, but it does pack a big V-8 (note, it's being renamed the Q70 for 2014).
Otherwise it's hard to believe that a Chevrolet sedan starts at just two grand less than a Jaguar, but that's now the case.
You could get a Jaguar XF--albeit a four-cylinder one--for just a little more.
