2016 Chevrolet Spark vs. Its Competition

2016 Chevrolet Spark, test drive outside Detroit, July 2016

The new 2016 Chevrolet Spark beats all its competitors on at least one front: It comfortably seats four adults.

The Spark's most direct competitor is the Mitsubishi Mirage.

It's also a five-door minicar, about the size of the Spark, but Chevy beats it handily in style, performance, features, equipment, infotainment, and overall driving experience.

An updated Mirage for 2017 may make up some of the difference, but we haven't driven it yet.

The adorable Fiat 500 may be a strong rival for the restyled Spark, but it simply won't hold four adults for long, if at all.

The latest Mini Cooper has added a five-door hatchback model at last, but it's a far larger and much pricier car than the littlest Chevy, if more fun to drive.

The two-seat Smart ForTwo is also entirely new this year, and at last it's a competent urban runabout and pleasant enough to use--though if you ever carry a third person or lots of stuff, the Spark will serve you where the Smart can't.

Quick Specs
7.4
The 2016 Chevrolet Spark is an all-new version of the minicar that actually seats four adults; its more "adult" styling, higher-quality materials, and optional active-safety features may make it the best of the tiny cars.
4.2
The 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage likely won't delight you or impress your passengers all that much, but it's a lot of efficient transportation for the dollar.
7.2
The 2016 Smart ForTwo promises parking easeā€”and this time, maybe better fuel economy and handling.
6.6
The 2016 Fiat 500 remains distinctive and stylish, with the Abarth and Turbo models scoring high for driver excitement and the electric 500e perhaps the best all-round version (but only for Californians).
