The strongest rivals to the 2015 Chevy Spark are the fashion-forward three-door MINI Cooper and Fiat 500.
The MINI is pricier, far more fun to drive, and the Fiat simply won't fit four adults but offers charisma and that ineffable touch of Italian style.
The Mitsubishi Mirage is a marginally larger five-door hatchback that's less expensive than the Spark, but also slower and grimmer--even if it does deliver on its 40-mpg gas-mileage rating.
But the Spark's dashboard and smartphone integration are light-years ahead of any competitor, including the two-seat and now ancient Smart ForTwo (which will be redesigned next year) and the "3+1" seat Scion iQ (which may be on its last model year for the U.S.).
For all those reasons, plus a good safety record, the Chevy Spark stands at the top of the minicar category.

Quick Specs | |||||
The 2015 Chevrolet Spark can actually seat four adults and manage frugal fuel economy; it's best of the minicars. |
The 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage smaller than a subcompact and larger than a minicar, but offers five-door hatchback versatility on the cheap–and the best fuel economy you'll find in a non-hybrid car. That comes at a price in performance, though. |
The 2015 MINI Cooper hardtop is a slightly larger car with all the virtues of earlier MINIs and fewer drawbacks; it's nicer and quieter inside, the base car is closer to the Cooper S in performance, and it retains the rollerskate handling and cheeky character it's always had. |
The 2015 Scion iQ is made for city dwellers who have trouble finding parking; others will see it as a fashion accessory or a vehicular oddity. |
The Fiat 500 is one of the most stylish ways to choose a small car today, and the Abarth and Turbo models add more excitement for the driver. | |
