The 2018 Chevrolet Sonic faces off against pretty much the same set of competitors it’s had for several years now.
In the subcompact segment, only the Hyundai Accent is new this year; we haven’t driven it yet, but on paper, it offers good value and some of the latest infotainment and safety features.
The Honda Fit, new in 2015, remains a favorite in the segment for the unparalleled flexibility of its Magic Seat interior, which can turn the small hatchback into a veritable moving van if required.
For interior space, it’s the Nissan Versa, though passenger volume comes at the cost of substandard finishes and switchgear.
The Ford Fiesta still wins on the fun-to-drive scale, but it’s now both the oldest and smallest car in the segment.
Finally, an underappreciated gem is the Toyota Yaris iA sedan (actually a Mazda is disguise), which is both fun to drive and surprisingly large inside.
It’s a far better car than the aging Yaris hatchback, with which it shares only a badge.
