2018 Chevrolet Cruze vs. Its Competition

If you’re looking for a compact car with a diesel engine, the buck stops here.

But if you’re open to a gas-fueled model, the 2018 Chevy Cruze has some serious competition.

The Honda Civic is our favorite in this segment for its roomy interior, fun-to-drive nature, and great safety record.

The Toyota Corolla remains the top pick for consumers, and while it’s not especially good at anything, it’s not especially bad, either.

The Mazda 3 forces some compromises in its goal to be the choice for enthusiasts, but we’re generally fine with that.

Look to the Hyundai Elantra with its wide array of engines and suspensions to fill just about every shopper’s desires.

And, finally, throw in the often-discounted Ford Focus—especially if you relish driving on a twisty road.

The 2018 Chevy Cruze offers lots of compelling reasons to select it, but we’d like to see more safety tech on its standard equipment roster.
6.2
The 2018 Ford Focus is irony on wheels: it comes in a dizzying range of models, of which the SEL and ST are our picks.
7.5
The 2018 Honda Civic is a good car made better by plenty of options and value at nearly every stop.

The 2018 Mazda 3 adds standard active safety features to an already compelling value. Among compact cars, this is one to consider.
6.3
Perfectly average in every way, the Toyota Corolla is thoroughly competent, but not at all interesting.
