2014 Buick Enclave vs. Its Competition

The Buick Enclave isn't so much a minivan replacement as a minivan alternative--chucking the image problems along with the sliding side doors, but carrying on with most of the interior space and family-friendly features.

In that way it's much like the other seven- and eight-passenger crossovers in the premium niche.

We like the Dodge Durango, which has a little more authentic off-road and towing capability, as well as available HEMI V-8 power.

The Acura MDX is a direct competitor, without the Buick's suave good looks but with a bulletproof reputation for durability and a vast, flexible interior.

The Audi Q7 offers a demure German take, with less interior space but tighter road manners and an available diesel model with good highway fuel economy.

Finally, there are Ford's twin offerings, the distinctly un-alike Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT.

The Flex is the boxiest crossover this side of Volvo, but one with trend-setting features when it was new, and to this day, to match its style; the MKT's a related, bodacious-looking crossover with polarizing looks and sky's-the-limit technology.

Quick Specs
The 2014 Buick Enclave impresses with plus-sized chic--and it's one of the safest family crossovers you can buy.
The 2014 Acura MDX is more focused than ever on its mission of keeping the entire family comfortable, content, and entertained—and yes, that still includes the driver.
There's much to love about the 2014 Audi Q7 and few if any failings; it does everything a three-row crossover vehicle should do, with great elegance and sophistication—and skips the faux-rugged nonsense.
The 2014 Dodge Durango is a great family hauler, and a top-notch utility infielder when you need extra brawn—made better this year with some important upgrades.
Boring isn't in its vocabulary: the 2014 Ford Flex makes owning a family wagon a statement of style.
The provocative Lincoln MKT has undeniable charm--a fantastic cabin, great infotainment features, and paddle-shifted EcoBoost power--but you have to buy into the look.
