2018 BMW M5 vs. Its Competition

2018 BMW M5
Kirk Bell Kirk Bell Senior Editor

The M5 has spawned some serious competition from excellent luxury brands.

The M5’s closest rival, the Mercedes-AMG E63 sedan, offers even more luxury and space, has stupendous power, and now delivers handling that it hasn’t in the past.

The Cadillac CTS-V is raucous fun, but it trails the BMW in refinement.

Audi’s S6, soon to be replaced, isn’t as much of a track star as the competition, but it has always been sophisticated and it may have made BMW turn to all-wheel drive.

The Lexus GS F performs well on a track thanks to its torque vectoring rear end, and it offers plenty of luxury, too.

The 2018 Audi S6 stands with an impressive hand: quality interior, great performance, functional shape. It's possible to find better examples from other cars, but they all cost significantly more.
7.8
The 2018 Cadillac CTS-V scorches the earth, and leaves the E63 and RS7 with some burn marks.
7.0
Add more power and the 2018 Lexus GS F could stare down any high-performance sport sedan from Germany.
8.3
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class goes to excess--the right kinds of excess--to preserve its best-of status.
