What are the closest rivals to the 5-Series? The cast of competitors has changed in recent years, and we'd now rank the Jaguar XF and Infiniti Q70 (formerly the M) as the toughest rivals from a performance and luxury standpoint.

Both offer great handling and a pretty impressive amount of interior space--as well as a gorgeous interior; from Jaguar you get a near-ideal mix of capable handling and performance, combined with a smart, classy feel and excellent interior comfort.

There's a base turbocharged four-cylinder base engine in the XF, while the Infiniti M has V-6, V-8, and Hybrid versions.

As for the luxury and technology side, the 5-Series competes against the Audi A6, which has a beautiful interior that's shared with the A7 fastback; performance is also strong from its available supercharged V-6.

One other luxury rival is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which offers just as much of a range of variants, including a hybrid and an especially frugal E250 diesel model.

The E-Class has grown into more of a driver's car, and its steering and handling are now on par with the 5-Series, if not better.

The Lexus GS 350 is another possibility, especially for those who don't put as much weight on the tech options or fine details; the current version offers more of an entertaining driving personality than before, and the fine dealership experience you can expect from the brand.

Quick Specs
Whether it's more of a classic sport sedan or a technology-packed tourer you seek, the 2015 BMW 5-Series fills both roles admirably.
The 2018 Infiniti Q70 stands alone as a warm take on luxury that others have left behind. It’s not as luxurious as the others—but it’s not as expensive as those, either.
The 2015 Audi A6 may look a little sedate, but it's a brilliant performer–thanks to its diesel-driven TDI, the supercharged A6, or turbocharged S6 versions.
The 2015 Jaguar XF covers a broad range of needs, from the efficient 2.0-liter turbo model, to the over-the-top XFR-S performance sedan.
The 2015 Mercedes-Benz E-Class lineup is many vehicles in one, with comfort and luxury across the board and sporty manners for those who want them.
