The Jaguar XF and Infiniti Q70 (nee Infiniti M) are the closest rivals to the BMW 5-Series.
Both offer great handling and a pretty impressive amount of interior space--as well as a gorgeous interior; from Jaguar you get a near-ideal mix of capable handling and performance, combined with a smart, classy feel and excellent interior comfort.
There's a new turbocharged four-cylinder base engine in the XF, while the Infiniti M has V-6, V-8, and Hybrid versions.
The Audi A6 has a beautiful interior that's shared with the A7 fastback, along with strong performance from its available supercharged V-6, The current Mercedes-Benz E-Class has grown more attentive to drivers' needs, and for 2014 it gets some substantial improvements—and a new 550-hp version of the hot E63 AMG is on the way later in the year.
For those who don't place quite as much weight on the sensory experience, the Lexus GS 350 might be the way to go; it offers a lot of performance and technology, at a price that's significantly lower—and with Lexus' excellent dealership service.

Quick Specs | ||||
The 2014 BMW 5-Series is simultaneously a classic sport sedan and a technology-packed grand tourer. |
The 2018 Infiniti Q70 stands alone as a warm take on luxury that others have left behind. It’s not as luxurious as the others—but it’s not as expensive as those, either. |
Brilliance takes many forms in the Audi A6: the diesel-driven TDI, the supercharged A6, or the turbocharged S6 all stand out in ways the sedate body doesn't quite match. |
With backseat space as the one caveat, the 2014 Jaguar XF lineup can at once be refined, nimble, and a scorcher of a performer in XFR or exclusive XFR-S guise. |
What, me worry? The Mercedes-Benz E-Class reasserts its alpha status with a tighter forehead, a greener turbodiesel, and a pair of all-wheel-drive AMGs. |
