The Audi Q7 has a wide range of luxury crossovers in its sights.
The Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg are just a couple of them (both related somewhat to the Q7), but both of those models make more of an attempt to preserve off-road ability; they're also five-passenger vehicles, without the Q7's available third row.
Another strong rival is the BMW X5; the X5 is all-new this year, and while we haven't yet driven it at the time of posting it's expected to be more fuel-efficient and road-oriented than ever, with an interior that's more like that of BMW's recent passenger cars.
The Lincoln MKT is another worthy alternative; it doesn't have the Q7's reputation or rich attention to detail, but it does have a great cabin design and oodles of interior space.
Mercedes-Benz GL Class, in our opinion, comes the closest to offering what the Q7 does; like the Audi, it has a great turbo-diesel engine, three rows, and rich interior appointments—although it does offer a little more trucklike ruggedness as part of the package.
