2017 Audi Q3 vs. Its Competition

Luxury utility vehicles are trending into ever smaller size classes, yet there's not yet a set format, and the way that they're doing it is quite differently depending on the automaker.

The new BMW X1 is probably the most direct rival to the Q3.

The X1 is all-new for 2016 and is now built on a front-wheel-drive platform shared with Mini; that brings space-efficiency advantages, but the X1 isn't particularly inspiring from the driver's seat.

The Mercedes-Benz GLA is another strong rival; it's a CLA-Class spin-off ready to roll with an AMG edition and decent back-seat space compared to the CLA.

The Acura RDX is a full size larger and offers a V-6 engine and, in some ways, a lot more space and refinement at around the same price.

And then there's the Buick Encore, which is compact and nimble yet somewhat ungainly in its styling, as we see it.

Quick Specs
The 2017 Audi Q3 isn't the most space-efficient or fuel-efficient in its class, but it gives compact luxury shoppers the ride comfort, easy maneuverability, and flexible cabin they seek.
The 2017 Acura RDX is one of the smoothest, most responsive-driving compact crossover SUVs—even though it prioritizes practicality.
Pleasant to drive and built to a price, the 2017 BMW X1 is a mainstream subcompact crossover that is pleasant to drive but lacks the brand's "ultimate driving machine" performance.
The 2017 Buick Encore reaches for the compact-luxury stars, but it falls shy on styling and front-seat space.
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is a small, luxury compact 'ute that prioritizes "looks" over "feels," or in other words, it's probably perfect for a lot of shoppers.
