2017 Audi A6 vs. Its Competition

2017 Audi A6 (European spec)
Aaron Cole Aaron Cole Managing Editor

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series are both natural competitors to the Audi A6 and frequently cross-shopped.

The 5-Series has better performance in base models, but its dizzying array of options can be difficult to digest.

The E-Class has more advanced powertrain options than the A6, and a new wagon version of the Mercedes mid-sizer could tempt some SUV buyers.

The Cadillac CTS can be less expensive, but its powertrain doesn't feel as smooth or refined.

The new Jaguar XF is a relaxed cruiser with excellent handling and diesel power available, though its cabin isn't as charming as the Audi's.

Finally, the Genesis G80 (known previously as the Hyundai Genesis) is an excellent sedan without much brand prestige, but tons of safety hardware and excellent rear-drive handling in V-6 form.

Quick Specs
The 2017 Audi A6 is a stellar mid-size luxury sedan; it's a bit sedate, but still good enough to compete with some flagship vehicles from other brands.
The 2017 BMW 5-Series may do for tech sedans what turn-of-the-century 5-Series did for sport sedans.
The 2017 Cadillac CTS-V impresses on all fronts, unseating BMW and Mercedes-Benz by offering the best combination of performance and day-to-day livability in the large luxury/sport sedan segment.
The aluminum-bodied 2017 Jaguar XF is no lightweight when it comes to nimble handling or rear-seat space.
With the 2017 E-Class, Mercedes-Benz is pushing the boundaries of its autonomous driving technology, and backing it up with S-Class style.
The 2017 Genesis G80 is one of the first new cars from the nascent luxury carmaker, and it's a good leg to stand on.
