2014 Aston Martin Rapide vs. Its Competition

Competition for the Rapide S tends to span toward cars that are flat-out fast, and those that add a little more plushness and luxury, yet there are none that are quite as much like a sports car, or a coupe, as the Rapide.

The Porsche Panamera is likely one of the most common cross-shops; it has a much roomier backseat that's easy to get into, yet it drives more like a traditional large sedan—quicker than the Rapide, but not as sharp-handling.

The new Maserati Quattroporte is likely one of the toughest new competitors; while we haven't yet driven it, early drives have suggested it's more of a driver's car than before, with a vastly upgraded interior.

In the other direction is the Bentley Flying Spur.

Its driving experience is a little more detached, but there's more attention paid to long-distance comfort and customization.

Some might consider the Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG, which offers straight-line performance that's in the same ballpark, but forget about exclusivity as it looks like lower-trim CLS Class models.

The Ferrari FF is another possibility, but its odd all-wheel-drive layout, very confining 2+2 backseat layout, and very long wait times to even get one make it an outlier in this class.
