The R1T sets the pace for the American-made electric vehicle maker, sharing a platform with the forthcoming R1S five- or seven-seat SUV and other models. The first mass-produced electric truck to market, the R1T will face competition from the GMC Hummer EV and Ford F-150 Lightning, as well as several forthcoming electric trucks ranging from an electric Chevy Silverado to the Tesla Cybertruck.
The new Rivian R1T
The R1T captures attention. A halo of light rings the pickup to make it both futuristic yet traditional, and inside natural materials grace a spartan dash illuminated with large screens that blend into the design, instead of standing outside of it.
With a 135-kwh battery pack powering four independent motors (one at each wheel), the R1T makes more than 800 hp and 900 lb-ft of torque for a 0-60 mph time of 3.0 seconds and a towing capacity of 11,000 lb, though not at the same time. An independent air suspension with 6.5 inches of travel, and five drive modes with nearly 50 different drive settings lets the Rivian R1T twist through hairpin turns with agility and composure, clamber up deeply rutted rock trails, accelerate quicker than most sports cars, and do it all in near silence. It’s incredible for a vehicle weighing about 6,900 pounds.
With DC fast-charging at more than 200 kw, it can recoup 140 miles in 20 minutes of charge; Level 2 charging enables 25 miles of range per hour.
The versatility continues to the excellent packaging in the R1T, with 68 cubic feet of storage space spread out between the front trunk, a short 54-inch-long bed, and a gear tunnel between the two that can store everything from ski boots and carry-on bags to a camp stove and other accessories for the great outdoors. The cabin allows seating for five in comfort and style, with the latest in recycled natural materials and touchscreen connectivity.
With safety features such as automatic emergency braking, active lane control, blind-spot monitors, adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system, and a gear guard security system that monitors and records activity around the parked truck, the R1T provides safety and assurances behind the wheel and from beyond the truck.
Other standard features include a 15.6-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a power tailgate, a full-size spare, a glass roof, an on-board air compressor, vegan synthetic leather seats, and heated power seats. The R1T comes with a 5-year/60,000-mile warranty while the drivetrain and battery pack are covered for 8 years or 175,000 miles.
The R1T ranges in price from $67,500 to about $77,000 with an off-road package, and optional features include ash wood trim, cooled front seats, a power tonneau cover, a three-person rooftop tent and more.
Instead of a franchise dealer network, Rivian models can be ordered online, serviced at home via mobile vans, and shopped at stores.
