For 2002 Mercedes-Benz CL Class

Too much plastic from China, too many attempts to lower production costs!

I like the car. It drives really beautifully. On my personal car, I have converted their leaky hydraulic suspension to a coil over shock racecar type suspension. I lowered the car one half an inch when we did this and it made a lot of difference in handling. I also went one size larger with the front tires.
I installed slotted in drilled rotors with ceramic pads all around.

The thing I like least about it is the cheap plastic that is him used on the interior. Now that the car is a little bit old, a plastic and leather are getting brittle. I can see they wanted the owners of these cars to junk the car rather than restore it..
This was $100,000.00 car when it was new. I wonder how bad people feel that spent that much money for new car and watched it deteriorate..

I probably shouldn't be writing this about a car that I own. But, I believe in telling the truth. What they did with this particular model was install complicated systems that failed, plus these systems, cost a fortune to repair.. In one instance they use the same oil for the power steering at the use for the suspension system. If you did not notice the leak in the suspension system, polluted the oil for the power steering so both systems fail costing you between 7000 and $10,000 for repairs.
For some reason the federal government decided to issue a recall on the 12 cylinder cl600 models but not on the eight cylinder cl500 models. This recall covered the suspension parts, being as they were a safety hazard. Only the United States government to come up with a scheme like that. I wonder how much Mercedes paid the politicians to keep the mercedes recall costs down? Now that I fixed the suspension, the brakes, and several items, I'm sure the car will last another 300,000 miles.

Most people don't have the knowledge to do these kind of upgrades or they go to a dealer and get ripped off by the high price.

Next thing I have to do? Start working on the cheap plastic interior parts.
The cheap leather that was used in the seats. It's a shame.

I drove Mercedes from the early 50s models up to and through the 60s and 70s models. All of them were so much better than these 2000 and up models.. I guess I noticed the first downturn in quality starting with about 1978 and they were using Chrysler air conditioning control modules. Again, in an attempt to complicate something that works so well for so many years. Probably why these earlier Mercedes bring so much money is you don't have to spend a fortune to maintain a every 60 days.

I can imagine the problems they have with these 500 hp motors that shut themselves on and off at stop lights! Better have somebody in the trunk to push! Then again if you need a 500 horse motor you should be used to pushing unless it's in a Chevrolet, then it will run forever!

I need to find myself a nice 73 to 75 450 sel or 6.9 to drive until I die. Those were the cars! Not good on gas, but never needed much to repair. Then again, I had a pretty heavy foot in those days. In 1978, he could buy a beautiful 1975, 450 SEL for $10,000.00. I had an anthrisite gray one and a icon gold one. I bought my wife a 74 lapis blue 450 SL for $9500.00 in 1978 with only 22,000 miles on it. Those were the days. + More »
