Thank you to everyone for their insightful comments.
I was torn about the RX-7 exclusion as well, as it can make a case for being more 'pure' than the RX-8. And the M3, especially the E36 models, was a tough call as well. Those are two that would definitely have made a 7 car list.
If Supras were not going for stupid money they might have made it in there too, along with the NSX. Sigh. I thought I would get more grief for not having an American car on the list, especially the C5.

Interesting! Good to know I can have a Porche for less than 10 grands!

Nice write-up, though I'd contest the 1997-1999 M3 exclusion. I personally know of several that were bought in the $10-14,000 range and are very good autocross/track day cars. Otherwise, pretty near spot-on.

Great post with lots of tips from a real enthusiast! I loved the Mister Two -- even now the last one looks racy and contemporary. But it never got enough respect in the U.S.

But, what about the last generation (and gorgeous) RX-7? Light on its feet, all the benefits you cite for the RX-8, but a purer two-door coupe and not quite as thick through the midsection ....

I own a RX8 and completely agree with the picks you made for this article. A sports car should be about balance, not just power power power.
