Other Choices:

Hyundai has targeted BMW as a benchmark, but the real competition for the Genesis is from Japan—from the likes of the Infiniti M35/45 and Lexus GS 350/460—and also from Chrysler and GM, with the 300C and G8, respectively. According to initial reports, the Genesis doesn’t deliver the edgy handling response and communicative steering that characterizes the M35/45, or the flawless execution of the details that the GS flaunts, but against the American-brand sport sedans, the Genesis is a compelling alternative. Versus either the 300C or the G8, the Genesis sells for a similar price but offers a more spacious interior and a wide range of standard features. Dealership service is another issue; although Hyundai says that it will have a dedicated area and specially trained salespeople for the Genesis at each of its U.S. dealerships, it competes with several luxury brands that offer far greater depth of service at their dealerships.

    Genesis Test Drive

Drove the 290hp V6 yesterday. Very impressive inside and out. Solid, quiet, powerful and comfortable. Take the "H" off the trunk and most would think it was a Lexus or other luxary sedan.

    Test drove one yesterday

I also drove the 6 cylinder. It did not have the technology package.
Likes: Interior styling, fit and finish, awesome stereo (am anxious to hear the upgraded version in the technology package!), roominess, features, very cool dashboard & instrumentation, quietness, very smooth ride.
Dislikes: Too big and cushy to be tossable (this is NOT a sport sedan), does not feel as strong as 290hp, accelerator needed to be really floored before the car would get up and go. Brakes a little bit touchy. Driver's seat felt more economy-car to me than luxo-cruiser, would have liked a little more thigh support.
Verdict: A worthy replacement for my 2007 TL which comes off lease next year. Others to consider will be new TL, TSX, and Maxima.

    Nice but way over priced

Test drove it last weekend and was impressed...however, was extremely turned off by how much the dealership was asking for it...$40k and it only had the standard package...so much for their "Luxury Sedan for under $30K" promos...I told them I'd check back with them in a few months and wished them luck!

    Genesis test drive!

Awesome! I drove the genesis last sunday and I thought I was driving BMW. Cabin was quiet, brake was firm, and handling was solid. Two of my kids who were sitting back said they had enough reg room.

    bought one -- love it

I now have 1K on the car -- bought a month ago for 36500 with options. I'm getter way better city mileage than I expected -- 24mpg, and have yet to take it for an extended drive on the highway. You do need to purchase the optional Ipod cable if you wish to take full advantage of the IPOD's menu. Car takes too long to reduce RPMs if you push the accelerate to the floor and then instantly remove it... mind you I used to own a porsche, so perhaps not a good comparison.
Great ride, very comfortable. For my money, it provides all of the options I want without the overpricing you pay for the bwm/lexus/infinit branding.

    Mr.

I drove a V-6 today, without the technology package. As a whole I was impressed. The car is solid and well isolated from both noise and road roughness. The interior quality is as good as most luxury cars, and the cabin layout is intuitive.
The engine did not feel as powerful as I expected, but it sounded great. The car had very neutral cornering with only a hint of oversteer. I could carry a lot of speed through the corners with this car, the tires gripped well and the suspension felt solid. The steering had very little feedback however, and although it cornered well it was not anywhere near as fun to drive, accurate, or confidence inspiring as a BMW, often considered the benchmark for cornering dynamics.
Once again, this car was very impressive as a whole. There is no question it's a bargain, and the difference in cost between the Genesis and well known luxury cars are mostly intangible (service, cornering feel, etc.)

    I dunno...

I'm totally impressed by this car, don't get me wrong. But for similar money, you could buy the Lincoln MKS which was scored slightly higher by Car Connection. I think the MKS has a little more bang for the buck because of it's technology. I know a lot of you may never get a Lincoln but I must say the MKS looks like a marginally better car.

  15. By Ray #15, Posted: 8/21/2008

    WOW!

Great car. For the price please I have Ford and Lincoln products, and nice as they are they dont hold a candle to the V8 version. If I was German I might be getting a little nervous at this point.

    President

I test drove the Genesis 2 days ago before I inked the deal for a 2009 Maxima. I was told by a friend that I at least needed to look at it before I bought the Maxima. I was hoping to find fault with the car as i REALLY wanted to Maxima I had already took for a test drive. When I got in the V-6 model without the Tech package I will have to say I was in awe! The only thing I found fault with was that it did not offer a heated steering wheel. I loved the Genesis and will take delivery of my blackpearl/cashmere Genesis V-6 with the Tech package tomorrow. It is by far the best car for the money out there!

    Bought one then another

Last week I bought my wife the V6 with everything but the tech package. I drove it over the weekend and was so impressed that I went back on Monday and bought myself one. I have owned many German autos and this is in the same league as the 5 series and costs less. I am impressed with its handling and quiet interior. I have never been impressed enough to buy two of the same vehicles at the same time. If you are thinking about one take a drive and you will be impressed.

    Just traded in my CLK

Test drove it yesterday and traded in my old CLK. I needed a commuter car and you can't beat this car in price/performance. I was also looking at the 550i since BMW is giving .9% interest. I needed a commuter car and you can't beat this car in price/performance. I also have a Porsche for the weekends.

  19. By Edje #19, Posted: 9/3/2008

Genesis - BMW without the EGO

Rides as solidly and smoothly as the 5 series I traded. I find the engine more responsive and wonder where someone would drive to exceed its road handling. The interior is a silent as any I've ever been in and the stereo converts it into my favorite listening environment.

  20. By DJBruan #20, Posted: 9/8/2008

    DJ

I took delivery of my Genesis 3.8 with tech pkg on Saturday. We took it to the cottage for the weekend and we are very, very surprised with this car: quieter than the ES330 we traded, much better performance and just a very nice job by Hyundai. Take off the label and you wouldn't know it wasn't one of the Lexus' we tested. Hyundai got our money because it was just too good a value to resist. We still can't believe we are driving a Hyundai! It's true.

The luxury sedan without the attitude

I was always hooked on Mercedez and BMW because they handle the road well and because I grew up in Germany. The Genesis is everybit as good and without the attitude. I love the faces that people make when you tell them you bought a Hyundai and then show them the genesis. Mine doesn't have the H on the back but the Genesis winged logo. I had three people ask me if it was a Bentley.
The car delivers on all promises with a great value, but it is for people who have enough self confidence that they appreciate the car more than the name. P.S.Highway mileage is close to 30 mpg and that on regular fuel.

what ups with 1 heated seat

for some reason they only did a heated driver seat, you cant even upgrade to heated river and passager although the driver seat can be upgraded to heated/cooled seating.. sorry hyundai not quite baller yet

  23. By Bobby #23, Posted: 9/29/2008

    Impressed

I test drove one today and I am in shock how great it is. I always saw Hyundai design(interior and exterior) as weird. The Genesis is a big change for Hyundai. I tested the non-tech package ($36,000). It was smooth, quick and comfortable. The car in person is pretty nice. The only fault I could muster is when I let go of the accelerator at high speed it did not rev down so smoothly. But I could messed up somewhere as I was just blown away how well it performed.

    Always in the Dog House

Like many men/kids(as my wife would refer me as), I find myself buying the toy 1st and ask for forgiveness later. I thought I was going to be in the dog house at least for two weeks when I committed to Ron/sales @ Hyundai of Wesley Chapel, FL for a $40K Hyundai. What ever happen to the $5K Excel all my friends had 20yrs ago? I can blame it inflation, but that would not be fair to Hyundai. The $40K is a great deal for all the car you are getting with the Genesis V6 w/ tech package. Believe me I know, cause I just sold my 07 GS350 and the Genesis is just as good if not better in a few ways for lesser money. I have owned and driven a lot of cars from Caddy Deville to Ferrari 360 and I have to say, Hyundai has altered my perception of their product and quality. I thought I would never drive a Hyundai in my post college days never less own one. The other perception that Hyundai has achieved with me is that I now realize that a quality luxury car can come from Korea at a affordable price. OK, enough of my rambling praise of Hyundai. The fact still remains that I brought a $40K without notifying my wife. For sure I was going to get a mouthful when I bring the car home. To my surprise, like the 1st I saw the Genesis, my wife was happy that I brought the car. It must of been all the neat goodies such as the 1 year free XM radio that got her good side. No dog house for me this time. Yeah for me.... :-)

    E320 or Hyundai Genesis

Well, after reading all these postings, I am becoming more and more interested in the Genesis. Currently I drive a 2000 E320, but the maintance and repairs are costing me a lot. I had seen the Genesis when it first came out but was somewhat hesitance. After reading all of your comments, including the car connectin, mortor trend and car and driver, I must say that I am more and more convince as the days go by. The car is beautiful and for the price, give me a break. I know many people comment that Hyundai copied Lexus, but then again, back in 1990, Lexus copied Merceds with thier LS400. In my opinion, the car, for what ever it looks like or what ever people say, it is dead gorgeous and a steal for the price. Would I spend another 60k for another E class, hell no. I will update once I do make my final decision, especially since Motor Trend is highly considering this car as Car of the Year. Thank You Hyundai!!!

2008 Hyundai Genesis- sudden, unexpected acceleration

2008 Hyundai Genesis- sudden, unexpected acceleration
Hyundai made a new model, Genesis in 2008. I purchased the car on October 30th, 2008. Then, not that long after on December 16, 2008 at 11:00PM, I was pulling into a parking space (5 miles zone) between the other car and a fence when my car accelerated without pressing the gas. When I set the gear from D to R, reverse, my car literally accelerated all of sudden and hit the other car on my left hand side. My car then popped out to fence on the pedestrian and stepped on the status stood right out side of the fence. The car muffler fell down with the accident, but my car still kept going reverse for the other 5 seconds.
The thing is right after the accident, we called the service center in Hyundai. They towed my car to investigate problems for a week, but then returned to us as they could not find any problems on their computer system in the car. Or, they even asked us to pay over a $5,000 of body damage. The car accident took a place within 2 months of purchasing the car. However, they insist that they are not responsible for any compensation.
A quick look on the internet has shown me the other genesis car accident in S. Korea related to the sudden acceleration. They are now selling the car out side of country; however, I strongly think that they should recall all their genesis and fix the problem triggered sudden acceleration.
Again, Genesis was born in this year, and there are at least two sudden accelerations with this car as long as I have known.

  27. By Joe Marinelli #27, Posted: 1/2/2009

    Cartalk

I suspect the sudden unexpected acceleration experienced by "mimi" had something to do with mimi. Remember the bogus Audi acceleration claims that hurt that model? This Genesis is going to change the dynamics in the high end car field and there are those interested in delaying this or short circuiting it. If it happened mimi, you will have no problem proving it. If it didn't, they will have no problem telling you where to get off.

    European Influnces

I thought you guys may be interested in the reason the car so closely resemble European cars is because most if not all of the panels are built and designed by German automotive companies. These Automotive company's do most of the panels in BMW, Audi, and so on. The reason I know this is because I am an engineer for an American company who designed the joystick in the car. Thought you may find that interesting.

    This is sad

    Man this is sad....
Theres a lot of hyundais that are a copy of japanese prodced cars.
Ive been to canada this summer, and on TV I saw a hyundai Ad.
It was a Hyundai sonata (looks a hellva lot like a honda) and the ad was claiming that it was much more better than a honda or toyota.
Then I was thinking since when???
My uncle bought a new Sonata (2,3 years back), and that thing was a piece of shit!
After 2 years of use, he sold the Lemon for 50 bucks.
The genises is a sad, sad, sad copy.
The front looks like a Benz, and the back looks like a new generation Toyota Premio.
Look id rather drive a real car, than drive a copy.
And in these fragile econimic times, who wants to buy a new car????
Id rather buy a nice used Lexus, Acura,Mitsubishi or Infiniti.
And if you are gonna buy a new car, you got to think about resale values.
Im guessing this "Luxury" car will end up in some crappy used car dealer selling for 3000 dollars in about 3-4 years.
Or even better they might end up in the scrap heap at a junkyard.
Im betting that in a few months youll see these "Luxury" cars plauged with problems, and people will be saying 'What a Lemon!'
I guess when hell freezes over, Hyundais will be the ultimate "Luxury"
brand. Pffffft that thought makes me laugh.

    WOW HYUNDAI

i'm in a state of shock,,, this is an awsome car,,,i was test driving last friday and i thought i was driving BMW. the thing that awes me the most is that this car comes from Korea. I know Hyundai is the 6th biggest Auto prodcucer in the world. but they are not known for luxury sedan,,, i never expected Korea would make such a luxury and nice car like this. If it wasn't the label i bet you everyone will think that this is lexus or Auodi. Well i never thought i would buy hyundai but this is a steal ,,, for those who value performance over brand name this is the car you should get

I love the car and the company should keep it up as the best to rull from now

This is sad? heck no this is brilliant!

a biased personnel made a comment about this lovable car that it looks just like copy of benz and blah blah and he/she would rather buy lexus, acura and Mits..Uhh last time i remember Mits is failing in both in sales and production rates, and I have never seen any mits car with v8 in U.S. Please get the prejudice out of your mind. It wasn't selected as a car of the yr just because of its price tag.
I test-drove this car just days ago, and I'm serisouly considering to trade-in my TL. The interior is well-refined and the engine is the smothest and the most powerful that hyundai has ever built! Serisouly Lexus and Acura now might have a new rival.

    Great Car

#36 you have some real issues...hyundai got you scared since most of the new sales are coming FROM BMW to Hyundai, lol....Obviously you have NOT driven or even sat in a Genesis and your speaking out your rear end. Maybe if you could come up with some substantial points and not sound like a kid who borrowed mommy's computer and quickly posted your garabage before being grounded...someone MIGHT listen to you...as it goes you sound like a complete MORON!

  37. By Veracruz #38, Posted: 6/17/2009

I own a 2008 Veracruz Limited, we love the car. Now with the Genesis out, and getting some pretty good awards and nods from car magazines, I can see why. I personally haven't seen the genesis up close, but from how well the Veracruz is designed, it has got to be one hell of a nice car. Way to Go Hyundai, and coming from me, that is a lot. I used to work on Hyundais when they first hit the states, and they were a car I would never want to be in, but not anymore!

  38. By Ryan #39, Posted: 11/20/2009

Just test drove the new 2010 Genesis Coupe at my local St. Louis Hyundai Dealer and was blown away by the performance. No wonder GM is struggling these days. Hyundai is leaving the competition in the dust. Price and Quality!

I used to sell Hondas for a living and thought I would never buy another make... until I drove my daughter's new Genesis. It truly challenged my beliefs about Hyundai. They may soon have a convert...
