The new Chevy Aveo will no longer be the smallest car in the Chevrolet lineup; a small Spark city car is due sometime in 2011.

But the Aveo still will compete against the smallest cars from Honda, Ford and others, mostly because of its base price and marketing.

The Ford Fiesta's been the subject of a media campaign to stir up interest in its jazzy looks and pert performance; it hardly needs it, since in handling and looks, it's small--in the good, European way.

The Honda Fit's a minivan in comparison, with lots of interior room and less of a premium placed on handling.

The Fiat 500 will be Chrysler's least expensive city-car option, and it's a charming two-door that may also come to the U.S.

via Italy as a convertible.
