Be aware that there are hybrid SUV choices with even higher fuel economy.

The 2009 Escape Hybrid along with the mechanically identical Mercury Mariner Hybrid and Mazda Tribute Hybrid are the highest-mileage SUVs in all the land.

But each of these vehicles is smaller than the 2009 Toyota Highlander Hybrid inside and out.

The Escape uses a four-cylinder hybrid powertrain that gets 34 mpg city, 30 mpg highway.
