I just got a very similar one - runs great and handles high miles really great - (like you said, a V8 is not the same as a V4). I'm installing nerf bars on mine - you planning any mods on it? Where did that other really good answer go?

Bilstein would be a good choice, after all that is what GM has been using. But Monroe are also good quality shocks.Probably a little less expensive too.
