on a 99 model you have to use scan too to reset the light on it, disconnecting the battery wont work on that new of a vehicle,if the cel light is on it may be telling you the gas cap is loose or you have a bad seal on a gas cap,that's a common cause on those for the cel light to come on...

it sound more like a cam or a crank sensor just went dead on it that will kill the power to the plugs instantly,that or a broken timing belt either one will cause that too happen,hook a scanner to it and see if it will give a trouble code for whats causing it to do that,good luck on it and enjoy...
