2003 Dodge Intrepid: Fresh Fluids

Follow Marty

Q--My mechanic said that my 2003 Intrepid with 60,000 miles said I don't need an antifreeze change. He advised that the fluid was good to 100,000 miles. That's what the Dodge salesman told me over five years ago. What is your opinion on the condition of the water pump lubricant and anti-corrosion features? Are they still effective after five years?

A--I would not take any chances, especially after five years with the same stuff. Yes, the additives are likely getting depleted. You can neither tell this by looking nor from checking the freeze protection. Your mechanic could test it with special strips (RadStrips brand, for example) to provide a reliable answer of the additive protection as well as reserve alkalinity.
