Mazda’s quintessential roadster, the MX-5 Miata, adds new audio and comfort features to its soft-top and hardtop models for the 2008 model year.
Both Miatas are powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 170 hp and a five- or six-speed manual — or 166 hp if it’s a six-speed automatic you desire.
Last year the Miata gained the retractable hardtop option. When the hardtop is retracted and folded away, the Miata still has 5.3 cubic feet of trunk space — more than enough for the typical overnight bag. This version of the Miata comes in just 80 pounds heavier than the standard soft-top roadster and the top takes just 12 seconds to fold away. Three interior packages-black fabric, black leather, and saddle-tan leather-carry over from the MX-5 soft top as do the Miata's powertrains and major options.
The 2008 edition of the hardtop is priced from $24,400. It gains an in-dash, six-disc CD changer on the Touring and Grand Touring trim levels. All hardtop roadsters get a driver-seat lifter with manual adjustment and standard tire pressure monitors.
The soft-top models add the same features. The base price on the original roadster starts at $20,585.
