Carroll Shelby’s teaming up with Hertz again. TheCarConnection.com has learned that the octogenarian legend has a high-performance follow-up in mind to last year’s rocking Shelby GT-H, which could only be found at Hertz rental counters. The plan is to produce a grand total of 500 new Shelby GT-H Convertibles and, yep, you guessed it. They’ll only be available as rentals through the Hertz Fun Collection, which includes a variety of sports cars and other high-profile “sporty” vehicles, such as the Jeep Wrangler, Nissan 350Z and the original GT-H, which is still available in limited numbers.

Our source was stingy with details, but we expect the ragtop – which will be customized at to at Shelby’s plant outside Las Vegas – to at least match the numbers for last year’s GT-H coupe. That should mean around 325 horsepower. Look for similarly distinctive bodywork, which on the coupe included a special scoop hood, side scoops, custom fascia, and a black body offset by gold Hertz stripes. For those with short memories, Shelby first teamed up with the nation’s largest rent-a-car company 41 years ago, producing a 306-hp Mustang that could be rented for $17 a day and 17 cents a mile. We can guarantee you the price on the new GT-H convertible will be a little bit higher when it hits rental lots by mid-year.

Oh, and if you’d actually like to own the GT-H Convertible, we’re told the very first will be introduced at the Palm Beach Barrett-Jackson Auction, over the weekend. Shelby and Mark Fields, Ford’s President of the Americas , will auction off serial number 1, with the proceeds going to Carroll Shelby’s Children’s Foundation.
