CHEVY BEL AIR, PONTIAC ROADSTER CONFIRMED FOR DETROIT

CHEVY BEL AIR, PONTIAC ROADSTER CONFIRMED FOR DETROIT
Confirming big speculation across Detroit, GM said on Wednesday that it would show a Chevrolet Bel Air concept and a Pontiac Roadster concept at January’s Detroit auto show. The Bel Air, styled after the most attractive Chevrolet in history, perhaps, is said to be a rear-drive, two-door concept with bench seats, a steering column-mounted gearshift, and a new Vortec 3500 turbocharged five-cylinder engine, which is expected to make its way into a new range of compact trucks. The Pontiac Roadster concept, says GM, is a lightweight two-seater with a 220-hp engine, a twin-cockpit interior and a European feel.

CHRYSLER CALLS PROWLER EXTINCT
2001 Plymouth Prowler The hot-rod look-alike Chrysler Prowler will become extinct one year earlier than originally planned, Chrysler announced today. While the company says in a statement that the vehicle was intended to be a five-year program when it was introduced in 1997, its shift from Plymouth to Chrysler was at first supposed to last two years, according to prior TCC reports. The $45,000 roadster will be supplanted in 2004 as the Chrysler halo car by the Crossfire, a German-made coupe built on Mercedes mechanicals. The last 300 of about 11,000 Prowlers made over the course of five years will be painted a special cherry red.

CAR TRAVEL STILL STRONG FOR HOLIDAYS
While air travel remains significantly damaged since the Sept. 11 attacks, holiday travelers are going by car in nearly the same numbers as last year, the American Automobile Association reported yesterday. The AAA says that air travel should be down 20 percent from last year, while highway travel will decline only about one percent from 2000. Some 42 million people are expected to travel over the open road for the extended December holiday season.

BUSH TO PUSH FOR FUEL CREDITS
A Reuters report suggests that the Bush administration is looking into tradable fuel economy credits as a way to drive fuel consumption down and fuel economy up. The news service says unnamed members of the administration are studying the proposal, offered by a National Academy of Sciences panel charged with studying the current CAFE standards. Like air-pollution credits, such a system would allow automakers like Ford and GM to trade for or buy credits in order to sell less efficient vehicles.

POWER: SALES TO HIT NEARLY 17 MILLION
Will 2001 be the best vehicle sales year ever? Nope — but J.D. Power says it will be the second best. Power estimates peg the yearly sales at about 16.95 million units, slightly above 1999 but down significantly from 2000’s record-setting pace of 17.4 million sold. Power notes that sales have slowed significantly in December to an annualized rate of about 14 million units, largely due to astounding October sales that pulled sales forward, and the expiration of many of the popular zero-percent financing deals.

POOK TO LEAD CART
Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) says it’s named Chris Pook to take over the presidency of the racing organization in the wake of a short, disastrous term held by Joe Heitzler. Pook founded the Toyota Grand Prix at Long Beach, and is expected to be a peacemaker among the owners of tracks and teams in the failing open-wheel-racing series. Heitzler stays on at chairman of the organization.

TOYOTA, PEUGEOT TO ANNOUNCE PLANT
France’s PSA Peugeot Citroen and Toyota will announce this morning the location of a joint-venture assembly plant the two companies will operate in Europe. The $1.5 billion project is to build some 300,000 small cars each year for Eastern Europe; locations in Poland and the Czech Republic are said to be among the front-runners to win the plant.

TODAY’S AUTO FACT

California leads country in clean machines: Over the past thirty years, the California Air Resource Board has adopted increasingly stringent air quality guidelines to combat smog in the state's sprawling urban areas. This environmentally aggressive tradition prompted California to draft clean air guidelines that influenced regulations across the country. As evidence of this legacy, the state now accounts for more than 27 percent of the electric/hybrid vehicles in America.
