The Journey has many competitors in the crossover segment, including the substantially heavier Ford Edge, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Chevrolet Equinox. TheCarConnection.com’s favorite vehicles in the class include the new Honda CR-V, which got a controversial new look in its recent restyling; the Toyota RAV4, which now offers a third-row rear seat; and the Saturn Vue, a far more handsome vehicle than it used to be, and one coming in a hybrid version this fall. Subaru’s Forester is also a worth a look, particularly in its base trim.

love it
i have an 09 journey R/T with the chrome appearance package, leather interior and sunroof. as a mom of 3 kids in carseats, i love this vehicle! it has tons of storage room, it is powerful, and it has next to NO road noise!! the only downside is that we have not been getting the mileage that it said on the sticker...but thats not a big deal.
highly recommend this vehicle!

Good
Just bought a 2009. So far I don't understand the negative points of this vehicle. Not eye-catching? My black one looks very sharp. Of course I could have bought an Element...but I would be out of my element. The dash on mine looks great and is very functional. Nothing square on mine. Interior is nice too...oh I just remembered it's not a Mercedes!!!! Honestly, this car is extremely quiet. The ride w/19 inch wheels is very smooth too. Yep, the 3rd row seat is small, but it's NOT a minivan. Anyhow, the price seemed reasonable too.

I am freaking out and just want an honest opinion. I am very close to signing the deal for a new dodge journey and keep reading good things and bad things. It is my first NEW car and I want to make the right choice.
Please give honest feedback if you can.

Worst car I ever owned
The journey appears like a nice car when you buy it, but you will begin experiencing problems at 5-10k miles. Engine knocking is regular. I have had several problems with the electical system including no interior lights twice, 1X the battery died, regular brake & engine light warnings, and, beleive it or not, complete loss of speedometer for prolonged periods of time. All of which the dealer continually tells me it cannot reproduce when I go there, which has been about 5x in the first year so far. I have given up even complaining and am just waiting for the lease to end so I never have to drive a dodge again. Buy this vehicle at your own risk- you've been warned.

I am having problems with traction on snow. My kids had to push the car through an intersection last week. Any one else having this experience?
By Lisa #9, Posted: 2/26/2009
Bad in Snow Too!
I agree with the other comments with performance in the snow! I have never had issue with driving in bad weather or snow until I owned this vehicle - now I'm afraid to drive in the snow because I fear I won't make it! I spin out and I'm not even on a hill! This is very dissappointing!

sensor? between interior lights
mind me if i am asking a dumb question but "what the heck is that thing?" it's located in between the front two interior reading lights right by the conversation mirror or sun glass holder? is it a camera?...lol please answer if any one can it's not in the manual and the dealer never told me?

simple, but nice!
i just traded in my 02 explorer for a journey on saturday. i've driven it about 80 miles and just now used up a 1/4 tank of gas. great on gas! we live in the south so snow/bad weather wont be a huge issue. i love all the storage and trunk space, but i agree on the keyless. it should have come with a remote. what car doesn't these days? now we have to go to best buy and have one installed.

A Journey we wish we did not take!
We bought a Journey less than one year ago. In the first three months of ownership the dealership had it in the shop for 1 month. It has had a few return visits. It is now having recalls for parts, the brake lights come on for no reason, it has an interior rattle, gas mileage is not what the sticker said it should be and now at 15K miles the dealership is telling us it needs new brakes. My Chevy truck has 140K miles on it and it has the original front brakes! Beware of the Journey unless you like visits to a dealership. We bought the extented warrenty through Chrysler for 1500.00 because the car was cheap. Between the repairs and car rentals it covers, it has paid for itself. I would not advise a purchase of this car. Spend the money and get a Chevy, Ford or foreign job. This Chrysler product is not worth the money and time wasted on it.

Happy Camper
I bought my Journey SXT 9 months ago and have found it to be a wonderful vehicle. I haven't had a single problem with it and it do not expect any. Gas mileage with the V6 is a bit lower than I anticipated, but for its size and weight it is right in line with the other vehicles I've owned. This looks to be the offspring of the Mercedes/Chrysler marriage of a few years back. Even the ignition key is the same as the one for my 99 Mercedes C230. Great product, I'd highly suggest giving one a drive!

I bought my Journey in March of 08 (I have the AWD SXT model) and it is the best vehicle I ever had. The ride is great, even in the winter, the only trouble I had was getting winter tires. I have never had this much confidence in a vehicle before, it looks great and I recommend it to anyone. ...

My 09 Journey has been in the shop off and on for the last few weeks. Engine and electric lights come, drives terribly and stalls. They have tried several things to fix and can not figure it out. It is a complete lemon. It is a fleet vehicle so I did not purchase directly, but I will never buy another car from this company ever again.
By cmpteki #18, Posted: 6/9/2009
I've had an '09 Journey SXT AWD for 3 months now; driven ~7k, and had no issues. AWD is excellent, road noise almost non existent, rear options keep the kids entertained, mileage is same or better than my v6 family sedan.
I too am curious as to what the camera looking gadget between the interior lights is...remote sensor for rear dvd perhaps? I haven't experimented.
I noticed the slight diff noise from outside the vehicle when using remote start (as reported by another on this list) and assume it has to do with the remote start timer. The noise is not there unless the remote start is used. Either way it doesn't concern me in the least and I had nothing but great experiences with our Journey.

I bought my Dodge Journey last year when they first came out. The only problem I had was my steering fluid leaked in my driveway withen the first 6 months of owning it. Warrenty covered it had it back the next day and been fine since. I bought the front wheel drive and it was my first time not buying winter tires for the winter and kept the tires it came with on. Wow I had no problems what so ever completly amazed by the handling of this vehicle in the snow. I am a first time Dodge owner and I love my Journey as do my 2 kids. The price was right and had all the options plus more than I was looking for and was $12 thousand cheaper than Chev with the same options. The gass milage got better as the engine got broken in ,I get excellent highway milage. I bought a white one and get compliments on it all the time. I love the look and style of it. I hate mini vans and a car is too small for my family and this vehicle is perfect for the growing family. This winter I will be buying winter tires and I no it will be that much better.

I just went to a Dodge dealership to check out a Journey, it is cheaper than the competition and it looks fine but I couldn't even take one for a test drive. Both Journey's we tried, the battery was died and so was the alarm! Hilarious. Maybe I'll take one for a drive in 4 years after I drop off my Honda lease! I hope Dodge improves, sad really.

the sensor looking thing between the mirror is a cabin temp sensing probe for the auto climate control.
By Cat #22, Posted: 7/29/2009
The Dodge Journey is an excellent family vehicle, but as with anything you get what you pay for. If your regular driving conditions consist of large amounts of snow and ice (8 months of the Canadian year) then the AWD model may be better suited for you. If you mainly do alot of city driving, and have good snow removal in your area, a front wheel drive will be fine.
If you are concerned about fuel economy, then you have to give up some of the passing power you would achieve with the V6 model. And to be completely honest, fuel economy has alot to do with who/how the vehicle is being drivin. I do not know of another competitive vehicle that will provide you with as many features as the journey for the same price. An AWD Journey with leather, sunroof, DVD, Navigation, etc. stickers out at $35,000. Now don't get me wrong, I am a fan of alot of the new "crossover vehicles," but have you compared prices with the other line-ups? Journey gets more bang for you buck everytime!
We have reached a point in our technological revolution where there are more computer systems in the average entry level sedan then in the first rocket ship that went to the moon. And in the days of mass production, their will always be the odd lemon. Some of these issues i am reading about in this blog our very legitimate issues, and I can only imagine the inconvenience and frustration it must cause those drivers. No one wants to spend a day in the service department or without a vehicle, but its just an unfortunate circumstance that on occasion will arise.

I am thinking about buying a Journey. I have also looked at the Edge, Vue and Mazda5, but love all the little stowage compartments the Journey offers and the way it rode on the test drive. I have read the complaints about trouble in snow and was wondering if these problems occured with the all wheel drive model.

Recently bought a 2009 journey, love the car,but its the small ticking noise in the engine at cold starts. noise dissapears after 10 seconds.anyone else have simular story.is this common for dodge.

I bought a Dodge Journey just under a year ago, I took it in for it's last lube, oil & filter & was told that I need new front brake pads & the rotors turned which will be a few hundred dollars. I told them there must be some mistake, I haven't even had this car a year & it only has about 12,000 miles on it. They said the average for having break jobs done on both the journey & the caravan are about 9,000 - 14,000 miles. They admitted that it is a problem with both vehicles (running through brakes) & I will have to have them done at least once a year. My boyfriend drives a Dodge Ram & has about 50,000 miles on it & still has not needed brakes done yet. When I called Dodge's main office I was told that the brakes have a 1 year/12,000 mile manufacturers warranty so if it is during that period they should be covered but anything over that I have to fork out the money. I am a single mom with 4 kids & don't have the extra money to have the brakes done at least once a year if not more. I am having various other little problems with it also including all sorts of noises. Maybe if Dodge gets enough complaints they will look into the brake issue with the journey. The customer service complaint phone number is (800) 992-1997 but don't count on them being too helpful since they say that ALL cars out there need breaks after about 14,000 miles. Funny, all the other vehicles I have ever owned never needed brakes done after 14,000 (or before). At any rate I would not recommend buying a Dodge to anyone, especially the Journey!!!

This is my first new car and I love it. I bought a Durango used (about 1 yr) and loved the heck out of it. It was a work horse and completely dependable. My Journey has ranked right up there, so far. I wished it was like the Durango I had which was alternative 2 or 4 wheel drive, but I will have real opinion once I go through a Michigan winter with it. So far, I actually have a sun roof, a real sound system...I love it, so far.

To the person asking about the ticking noise, if they haven't fixed it, have them check the short runner and manifold tuning valve. It took them several times to get it fixed on my journey. I love the car, but it has been in the shop many times. I have had it 15 months and have almost 34K miles on it. I drive a lot. This last trip to the shop they replaced my transmission. Is that ridiculous? Has anyone else replaced their transmission? Now my check engine light came on. 3 days after they replaced it. Taking it into the shop again. Frustrating!!!

I have one and I like it so far. The dealership treated me nice but selling a new car nowadays is like spotting a unicorn so the may have been drunk with joy. Before this I was the one person who ever had trouble with a Honda and it was entirely my fault of course.
By John #29, Posted: 10/14/2009
Wow, there are a lot of bad issues discussed here. I bought my 09 Journey in January of this year and had a tire sensor recall issue fixed in February. Last week I had both rear gate lift hydrolics replaced. My change oil light has come on about 2000 miles into the last oil change and my tire sensor is back on. My issues haven't been as serious as most of you guys but I'm sure the best or should I say is worst is yet to come. Eventhought I did not trust American cars, I was trying to do my part with buying an American car this time and sure enough it will be just like the saying goes, "No Good Deed Goes Unpunished"

I purchased my 2009 Journey last October and have just had to fork over $613.94 for new brakes for both rear tires. It started off with a slight squeal about 2 months ago. I took it in and they couldn't find anything wrong. Well just last week the noise turned into severe grinding. The work order states "investigate cause of grinding noise from rear. Carried out checks and noticed rear brake pads worn down and scraping on he rotors due to pads being seized in calipers. Replaced rear pads and rotors. Front pads are starting to get low and require recheck at next oil change." I was charged $369.20 for parts and $169.10 in labour plus $70.64 in bloody tax. There's only 28,000 km on this vehicle and this happens? Well next time the brakes screw up I'm taking it to a co-worker who is a licensed mechanic so it can be done for a much cheaper price.
I owned a Mercury Mystique for 8 years and only had to have the brakes replaced once. Chrysler Canada is definitely going to get an earful about this. I am not impressed at all.

I own a Dodge Journey SXT 2009 and what bothers me is the fact that I can't find winter tires for it. My tire size is 225 55 R19. I have gone to several tire shops and they all have said that they don't have this size. One place told me that Mercedes bought them all to sell to their clients on their model GLK. The dealer I bought the vehicle from said the same thing and could not recommend to me a lower tire size! What is a person to do in a province that makes it a law to have winter tires by December 15 of every year and will "FINE" you. I guess I won't be driving my Journey during the winter time.
By David #32, Posted: 11/1/2009
I have a 2009 Dodge Journey SXT with alot of extras, except Nav. I simply love it. I have just under 10K miles on it and no big issue thus far. I really love the ride, the handling and roominess of the crossover.
