Fuel economy is a real paint point for the 2014 Volvo XC60.
The base front-wheel-drive model is rated by the EPA at 18 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway. The challenge is that there are at least a handful of three-row SUVs on the market that achieve similar numbers with extra utility. If you upgrade to the T6 or R-Design all-wheel-drive models, and you'll earn 18/25 mpg or 17/24 mpg respectively, depending on the engine.
We wish we had better news regarding real-world results, but we haven't seen any better, with XC60 models returning 16 to 19 mpg in mixed conditions.
