Fit and finish in the 2014 Lexus IS are much-improved over the introductory cars of the last-generation model. Compared to the most recent 2013 Lexus IS, it's a smaller, but still noticeable improvement. The dashboard, for example, is much more structured and design-focused, but at the same time seems better-constructed.
Materials are also very good. The plastic, rubber, and other synthetic elements of the cabin are quality-feeling and durable-seeming, with only a few notable exceptions.
The main first-impression drawback in the cabin: the buttons on the steering wheel. These are items you'll interface with regularly, controlling the vehicle and infotainment controls of the IS, and they seem hollow, cheap, and unnecessarily plasticky.
Otherwise, the cabin of the IS is comfortable and spacious for its class. A 2.7-inch longer wheelbase for the 2014 model year improves rear leg room by 1.6 inches and front leg room by 0.9 inches. In all-wheel drive models, driver and passenger footwell areas are somewhat compromised by a center tunnel expanded to accommodate the transfer case.
Trunk room is also fair, if not great, at 13.8 cubic feet, a slight increase over the last IS. Overall cabin volume is also up significantly, thanks to the extra legroom, plus an extra inch of head room.
