Consumer Guide

The 2012 Toyota Tacoma is one of the few trucks with a base four-cylinder model. And as such, it's pretty good on gas, with ratings for base 2WD four-cylinder models returning up to 21 mpg city, 25 highway. On the other hand, 4WD V-6 models are considerably thirstier at 14/18.

It's worth considering, as well, that if you're planning to push the four-cylinder model to its limits, your mileage won't be any better in the real-world (perhaps lower) than that of V-6 models. But if it's mostly light commuting you do, you'll find better mileage than in GM's full-size hybrids—the Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid and GMC Sierra Hybrid.

The 2012 Toyota Tacoma can be a relatively green choice in frugal four-cylinder form.

How does the
TCC Rating work?
The TCC Rating is a clear numeric rating value based on a 10-point scale that reflects the overall opinion of our automotive experts on any vehicle and rolls up ratings we give each vehicle across sub-categories you care about like performance, safety, styling and more.

Our rating also has simple color-coded “Stop” (red), “Caution” (orange),
or “Go” (green) messages along with the numerical score so you can easily understand where we stand at a glance.

Our automotive experts then also collect and show you what other websites say about these different aspects of any vehicle. We do this leg work for you to simplify your research process.
