EPA

Despite the added power, Mini has managed a slight increase in fuel efficiency across the board, with the standard model now registering 37 miles per gallon. Perhaps more impressive is that the Valvetronic-equipped S makes even more power while earning a 36-mpg highway figure.

Though it's no hybrid or economy car, the 2011 MINI Cooper manages a solid 29 mpg city and 37 mpg highway in manual trim according to the EPA, while the automatic rates 28/36 mpg. The standard naturally-aspirated 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine remains zingy despite the relatively high efficiency marks. For the amount of fun packed into the MINI's chassis, it's a fairly remarkable figure.

The Cooper S, using its turbocharged 1.6-liter engine, scores similar figures despite generating 60 more horsepower at 181 horsepower total. At 27 mpg highway and 36 mpg city with the manual transmission, it's nearly as efficient as last year's base Cooper, and among the most efficient of any car offering this level of performance.  The automatic trails a bit at 26/34 mpg.

Conclusion

Peppy performance, sharp handling, a cute face, and enough efficiency to keep the green police off your back--the 2011 MINI Cooper has it all.

How does the
TCC Rating work?
The TCC Rating is a clear numeric rating value based on a 10-point scale that reflects the overall opinion of our automotive experts on any vehicle and rolls up ratings we give each vehicle across sub-categories you care about like performance, safety, styling and more.

Our rating also has simple color-coded “Stop” (red), “Caution” (orange),
or “Go” (green) messages along with the numerical score so you can easily understand where we stand at a glance.

Our automotive experts then also collect and show you what other websites say about these different aspects of any vehicle. We do this leg work for you to simplify your research process.
