Over the past several years, Volvo has ramped up feature content in the S40, while only modestly increasing prices, so the remaining S40 T5 now stand as reasonably well-equipped and decent values in the tight entry luxury class. Now that the former 2.4i trims have been eliminated from the lineup for 2011, there are no base-model S40 models. All S40 T5 models include 17-inch Spartacus wheels, eight-speaker sound, Sirius Satellite Radio, HD Radio, auxiliary and USB inputs, power driver's seat, front fog lights, a power moonroof, and a trip computer. Bluetooth hands-free is also standard on all S40 models.

With the S40 T5 R-Design, a long list of appearance enhancements are included, such as a sport body kit, color-coordinated side sills, front and rear spoilers, aluminum sport pedals, a sport shift knob, a sport steering wheel, and additional badging, plus a sport suspension, power moonroof, and power front passenger seat.

Options on the S40 are mainly consolidated into a few major packages. The Multimedia Package includes Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound, a 650-watt amplifier, ten speakers, and a navigation system with real-time traffic info. A Preferred Package includes leather seats, the power moonroof, automatic climate control, heated front seats, headlight washers, and rain-sensor wipers. Standalone options include Keyless Drive, rear park assist, the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), and Active Bi-xenon headlamps.

The 2011 Volvo S40 is well equipped and a pretty good value, though you should watch the options and the bottom line.

How does the
TCC Rating work?
The TCC Rating is a clear numeric rating value based on a 10-point scale that reflects the overall opinion of our automotive experts on any vehicle and rolls up ratings we give each vehicle across sub-categories you care about like performance, safety, styling and more.

Our rating also has simple color-coded “Stop” (red), “Caution” (orange),
or “Go” (green) messages along with the numerical score so you can easily understand where we stand at a glance.

Our automotive experts then also collect and show you what other websites say about these different aspects of any vehicle. We do this leg work for you to simplify your research process.
