The Infiniti M sedans, sold as the M35 and M45, are the largest luxury sedans from Nissan's luxury brand. That said, they have more of a focus on technology and sporty driving response than outright cushy comfort. The M35 and M45 exude luxury in a way the smaller G37 does not; it's as plush as the E-Class or 5-Series.

While the 2010 Infiniti M35 has a V-6, the M45 comes with a 325-horsepower, 4.5-liter V-8 teamed to a five-speed automatic transmission. The V-8 feels more responsive, even when the all-wheel-drive option is specified. The 2010 Infiniti M45 is especially comfortable for long-distance highway hauls, with plenty of space in front for adult passengers and lush fittings facing them from every angle. Supple leather upholstery and nice wood veneer trim, form a traditional feel that contrasts nicely with the M's real driving personality, as do the larger, well-appointed backseat and the swell amount of trunk and interior storage.

Along with all the expected safety features, the M45 can be equipped with high-tech content like lane-departure warning and smart cruise control systems, as well as a lane-tracking system will actually apply a brake to steer the car gently back in place.

Why should I also consider these? X

With a choice of six- or eight-cylinder engines, rear- or all-wheel drive, and great handling, the 2010 Infiniti M stacks up directly against the traditional German powerhouses.

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is newly revamped; more aggressively angled lines dominate its new body, while handling has become more engaging and its interior more heavily laden with electronic gadgets.

The BMW 5-Series is half-new this year; a 5-Series GT brings a copiously roomy wagon back to a new-generation platform, while the 2010 5-Series sedan carries over, awaiting a brand-new 2011 5-Series sedan replacement.

The Lexus GS offers the same drivetrain choices as the Infiniti M, with the addition of a Hybrid version that can't quite demonstrate a gas-mileage advantage when pressed hard.
