The 2009 Nissan Altima Hybrid combines impeccable crash-test ratings with a strong list of standard safety features to create a very safe sedan.

In both NHTSA and IIHS tests, the 2009 Nissan Altima Hybrid matched or beat all of its competitors. In IIHS tests, the Nissan Altima Hybrid earned the highest possible rating, "good," in both the frontal offset impact and side impact categories. The Nissan Altima Hybrid also aced its NHTSA crash tests, earning a perfect five-star rating in both front impact tests, as well as both side impact categories. In fact, the only safety credential missing from the Nissan Altima Hybrid's brush with the crash-test agencies is a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS.

In addition to its top-notch crash-test scores, the 2009 Nissan Altima Hybrid comes loaded with the sort of safety features that TheCarConnection.com's editors love to see. Edmunds reviewers list the standard goodies as "antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front-seat side airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags and front-seat active head restraints." The active head restraints are particularly useful, especially if you happen to get rear-ended, as they move forward to meet your head and help reduce the risk of neck injuries due to whiplash.

The modifications to the hybrid model do not affect sightlines, so visibility in this model is much the same as in the 2009 Nissan Altima, which ConsumerGuide describes as "very good to all directions."

Conclusion

It's hard to ignore the crash-test ratings earned by the 2009 Nissan Altima Hybrid.

Why should I also consider these? X

The Altima's closest competition in this broad field of popular mid-size sedans comes from the Fusion, which also feels very sporty.

The Passat has a different, more European character, and its peppy four-cylinder engine performs best out of any base engines in this field, but it requires premium fuel.

For safety, the Accord stands on top (it's an IIHS Top Safety Pick); also to the Altima's detriment, electronic stability control is still not offered on the four-cylinder model.

Compared to the Accord, Camry, and Malibu, the Altima feels a little perkier to drive, yet slightly smaller inside.

Especially versus the cushy Camry, the Altima comes across as decidedly sportier.
