The Bottom Line:

The 2008 BMW 5-Series thrills with its turbocharged six and great road manners; the other engine options are almost obsolete in comparison.

The 2008 BMW 5-Series offers traditional station wagon roominess with standard BMW quality.

Tremendously firm and supportive, the front seats in the 2008 BMW 5-Series Sports Wagon are among the best in any luxury vehicle in this price range. Even better are the optional 20-way power Multi-Contour front seats, which include adjustable lateral and lumbar support and an articulated backrest. In back, they're also quite comfortable but a bit less spacious than expected.  Mother Proof reports a seating capacity of five in this 2008 BMW, including the driver; the Washington Post describes the 2008 BMW 5-Series wagon as "plush, the motorized equivalent of an exclusive condominium...prestigious." According to Autoblog, this BMW 2008 offers "10-way power front seats [as] standard in all models" and "supportive seating is provided in both the front and rear," adding that "even adults won't mind sitting in the commodious backseat." ConsumerGuide is in agreement here, reporting "good headroom and legroom on firm, supportive seats...tilt and telescopic steering wheel make it easy to find a comfortable driving position." The caveat here for backseat riders is that "legroom and foot space can grow tight with the front seats far back and lowered."

Storage and cargo space pose few problems aboard this BMW 2008 model; Autoblog reports "standard split folding rear seats" provide what Car and Driver praises as a "very usable load area." The Auto Channel attests that the 5-Series 2008 BMW wagon has "all the positives of the 5-Series sedans with the added advantage of a cargo area that can carry all the family's presents to Grandma's house for Christmas." Edmunds details "a 34-cubic-foot cargo bay behind its fold-down rear seats, along with standard roof rails"; this interior space "expands to 58.3 cubic feet with the rear seat backs folded," according to The Auto Channel.

There's little to complain about when it comes to the quality and finish 2008 BMW 5-Series' cabin, either. Edmunds finds this BMW 2008 wagon offers "premium cabin furnishings, precision build quality," while Autoblog reports that for 2008, "ergonomic changes include more convenient window switches, relocated console ashtray and electronic shifter."

Noise levels are low; ConsumerGuide reports "wind rush is minimal at highway speeds."

Conclusion

The 2008 BMW 5-Series transports adults in a rich, serene environment.

Why should I also consider these? X

The 2008 BMW 5-Series's chief competitor, the E-Class, has more of an emphasis on comfort than the 5, with a roomier-feeling interior and a softer ride.

The A6 also feels a bit more spacious and comfort-oriented, but its performance--especially from the available 4.2-liter V-8--doesn't come close to matching that of the 550i's 4.8-liter V-8.

None of the competition offers a manual transmission either.

The Cadillac STS brings plenty of high-tech options and respectable performance, but it doesn't have the prestige of the 5-Series.

There's also the Infiniti M35 and M45, which bring brisk performance and some rival high-tech features such as a lane-departure system, but their cabins aren't as quiet and refined as those of the 5-Series models.
