Car and Driver

The 2008 BMW 5-Series offers numerous features--one or two of which drivers could do without.

Edmunds states that the 2008 BMW 5-Series wagon "is only available as a 535xi." Standard features here include "17-inch wheels, a sunroof, power front seats, leatherette upholstery, automatic headlights and wipers, automatic climate control, BMW Assist telematics and iDrive control interface." Autoblog reports that the BMW 2008's "vehicle and Key Memory allows users to personalize many electronic comfort, convenience and security features."

Standard-feature content on the 2008 BMW 5-Series Sports Wagon is as extensive as that of its rivals, but it's the astonishing list of high-technology options that really differentiates the model. They include an active steering system, adaptive bi-xenon headlamps, a head-up display, active cruise control, high-beam assist, front and rear parking aids, infrared-based night vision, a lane-departure warning system, heated rear seats, and a power rear sunshade.

Optional equipment for this 2008 BMW includes a "USB adaptor for iPods or MP3 players, which does not use the CD changer connections," according to Autoblog; while the Premium Sound Package is no longer available in the BMW 2008, "Logic7 premium stereo and 6-disc CD-changer [are] available separately." Additional BMW 2008 options include "Active Cruise Control with Stop and Go feature...On-board Navigation System, Head-up Display, Lane Departure Warning system, Night Vision, SIRIUS Satellite Radio, HD Radio, rear window- and/or rear door-window sunshades."

Unfortunately, Edmunds advises that the 2008 BMW's complicated "iDrive is still as user-friendly as a shift knob made of razor wire."

Conclusion

Lots of features make the 2008 BMW 5-Series wagon a pleasurable ride, but the iDrive system detracts from the cabin’s function.

Why should I also consider these? X

The 2008 BMW 5-Series's chief competitor, the E-Class, has more of an emphasis on comfort than the 5, with a roomier-feeling interior and a softer ride.

The A6 also feels a bit more spacious and comfort-oriented, but its performance--especially from the available 4.2-liter V-8--doesn't come close to matching that of the 550i's 4.8-liter V-8.

None of the competition offers a manual transmission either.

The Cadillac STS brings plenty of high-tech options and respectable performance, but it doesn't have the prestige of the 5-Series.

There's also the Infiniti M35 and M45, which bring brisk performance and some rival high-tech features such as a lane-departure system, but their cabins aren't as quiet and refined as those of the 5-Series models.
