Five stars, front impacts; five stars, side impacts

In reports read by TheCarConnection.com, reviewers felt encouraged by the solid number of safety features on the Altima. Nissan’s safety ratings seem to back this opinion.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2008 Nissan Altima Hybrid an impressive five stars in all categories save for rollover, in which it earned four stars. According to Kelley Blue Book, these ratings are matched by the Toyota Camry Hybrid and are superior to those earned by the Toyota Prius. The 2008 Altima Hybrid has not been tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). However, the base 2008 Altima received a rating of "good."

Edmunds rattles off the list of standard safety features available on the Nissan Altima Hybrid as including "Antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front-seat side airbags, and full-length side curtain airbags."

Conclusion

Great crash-test performance is the new hallmark of the Altima; Nissan scores five stars in all crash tests.

Why should I also consider these? X

The Altima's closest competition in this broad field of popular mid-size sedans comes from the Fusion, which also feels very sporty.

That additional driving sensation sets the Altima apart from the Accord, Camry, and Malibu, which all seem a bit heavier yet roomier in back.

With either of the engines, the Altima comes across as decidedly sportier than much of the competition--especially the Camry.

The Passat has a different, more European character, and its peppy four-cylinder engine performs best, but it requires premium fuel.

For safety, the Accord stands on top (it's an IIHS Top Safety Pick); also to the Altima's detriment, electronic stability control is still not offered on the four-cylinder model.

With some road noise entering the cabin, the Altima isn't noisier inside than most cars, except the Fusion.
