The Bottom Line:

A strong crash-test record and great visibility are moderated by the 2008 Nissan Altima's lack of a standard antiskid system.

Expert Quotes:

the basic Altima is well equipped, and the Hybrid is a little more so

pricey packages with no a la carte options
Edmunds

An exceptional array of features impressed reviewers of the Altima; Nissan’s packaging of those features left some road testers miffed.

Kelley Blue Book lists their favorite standard features as such: "power locks with remote keyless entry, power side mirrors, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, AM/FM/CD six-speaker audio and a steering wheel with tilt and telescope adjustment." Cars.com adds to that list on the Altima, "Nissan's Intelligent Key feature, which allows the engine to start as long as the key fob is inside the vehicle."

Optional equipment options are considerable, and they come in three packages. Edmunds notes that the "Convenience Package adds automatic headlights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, an auto up/down passenger window and a rear spoiler," and the Connection Package adds the same upgrades, plus "sunroof, rear A/C vents, leather upholstery, heated front seats, Bluetooth connectivity, HomeLink, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a nine-speaker Bose audio system with six-CD/MP3 changer and satellite radio."

Cars.com suggests the Technology Package for tech-savvy drivers. The package includes "all the features of the Convenience and Connection packages, plus a navigation system with voice recognition, DVD and a 6.5-inch touch-screen monitor."

While there are plenty of bells and whistles available for the Altima, Nissan gets scolded for not allowing drivers to pick and choose specific features. Edmunds sums it up by stating, "options are encapsulated in three pricey packages that limit customer choice."

CNet likes the Altima Hybrid’s “outstanding voice-recognition system, a great Bluetooth hands-free calling interface, and an excellent Bose stereo.”

Conclusion

If you've got money to burn, there are plenty of cutting-edge features available for the 2008 Nissan Altima Hybrid.

Why should I also consider these? X

The Altima's closest competition in this broad field of popular mid-size sedans comes from the Fusion, which also feels very sporty.

That additional driving sensation sets the Altima apart from the Accord, Camry, and Malibu, which all seem a bit heavier yet roomier in back.

With either of the engines, the Altima comes across as decidedly sportier than much of the competition--especially the Camry.

The Passat has a different, more European character, and its peppy four-cylinder engine performs best, but it requires premium fuel.

For safety, the Accord stands on top (it's an IIHS Top Safety Pick); also to the Altima's detriment, electronic stability control is still not offered on the four-cylinder model.

With some road noise entering the cabin, the Altima isn't noisier inside than most cars, except the Fusion.
