Mitsubishi’s Galant sedan gets restyled for the 2009 model year, with the new face making its public debut at the Chicago auto show this week.

The new front end gets a simple chrome-framed grille and a reshaped fascia. On the rear end, a restyled decklid with new taillamps tones down the more crisp lines that had been in place on the large four-door sedan. New trim has also been installed in the cabin.

All Galants come with anti-lock brakes, and dual front, side and curtain airbags.

The Galant lineup consists of four models. The ES features a four-cylinder engine with a four-speed automatic. A pair of Sport models offers either a four- or a 230-hp six-cylinder engine; The four-cylinder sport has a sunroof, automatic climate control, fog lights, 17-inch wheels, and an anti-theft system. The V-6 version adds a 360-watt stereo system and six months of Sirius satellite radio. The Ralliart gets the V-6 with a five-speed automatic, plus a sport-tuned suspension.

Why should I also consider these? X

The Chevrolet Malibu has made the most dramatic transformation, from rental-car fodder to beautifully styled, taut-handling family sedan, with a strong V-6 backed by a four-cylinder and a hybrid version, too.

The Honda Accord was just redesigned with dramatic new styling and a fantastic new cabin for the 2008 model year.

The Nissan Altima is the closest competitor to the 2009 Mitsubishi Galant; it comes in four- and six-cylinder versions, with aggressive styling and great front-drive handling, but the Altima has more cohesive styling and a sportier feel overall.
