Hyundai says itsVeracruz crossover tops the people-carrying talents of the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot and beats them with more standard safety gear too.

The seven-seater is 9.7 inches shorter than a Mercedes-Benz GL but has more cargo volume. Inside, the room is put to good use with a third-row "Hyundai Hideaway" bench seat that is swallowed into the cargo area when needed.

The Veracruz doesn't lack for power. Hyundai's 260-hp 3.8-liter V-6 is under the hood, teamed with a six-speed automatic transmission. The engine, shared with the Azera sedan, is capable of 25 mpg on the highway.

The Veracruz ' major surprise is subtle, handsome styling — certainly better looking than the mid-size Japanese crossovers. Outside it's curvaceous and trim, while inside it's sophisticated, with metal trim and blue backlighting.

Safety equipment is comprehensive. Anti-lock brakes with brake assist are standard, along with tire pressure monitors and stability control. Dual front, side, and curtain airbags are also found on every Veracruz.

Three editions are offered. The base GLS will come with an AM/FM/XM/CD player with MP3 capability and power locks/windows/mirrors. A Premium package option includes a power tilt/slide glass sunroof, power driver seat, heated front seats, leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and a backup warning system.

SE editions add in 18-inch wheels, a roof rack, and a console with cooling capability. Leather, an entertainment package and an Infinity audio system are options. Limited models get leather seating, heated front seats, a power front passenger seat, automatic climate control, the Infinity audio system, and a power sunroof and tailgate.

For 2008, the Veracruz Limited now offers these items as standard equipment: memory settings for the power driver seat, exterior mirrors and steering wheel, power tilt/telescopic steering wheel, adjustable gas and brake pedals, proximity key with immobilizer, rain-sensing wipers, 115-volt power outlets, and lighted door scuff plates.

The SE versions also get a power tailgate option and 115-volt outlets as options for 2008. An LG navigation system is a new option.

Why should I also consider these? X

Although the Veracruz was designed to rival the RX 350, it really takes on more modest, mainstream competition such as the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot.

Compared to those models, the Veracruz has a different style that’s not quite as simple and stark.

And although it’s closer in appearance to the Edge and CX-9, those two models are sportier than the comfortable, feature-oriented Veracruz.
