Among the SUVs and sportscars decorating Porsche’s stand at the 2007Frankfurtauto show, is the new 2009 Cayenne GTS, a midline version of the sport-utility vehicle with V-8 power and new exterior trim. The lowered and skirted GTS gets the sporting features that other Cayennes have lacked — most notably, a six-speed manual gearbox. Porsche says it also has a sizeable increase in power from its V-8, without specifying how much more power the GTS sports — although it’s rumored to be about 20 horsepower.

The GTS version adds to its V-8 and all-wheel-drive powertrain a set of 21-inch wheels with 35-series tires, which in turn require extended wheel arches. The body has been lowered, and inside, the GTS gets new front and rear seats. All U.S. versions will come with Porsche’s Active Suspension Management system, which uses electronic controls to dictate the responses of its air suspension.

The Cayenne GTS will go on sale in the U.S. in March 2008 for a base price of $69,300.

Why should I also consider these? X

The BMW X5 boasts some degree of off-road prowess along with its good on-road handling, and it has a well-appointed interior, in addition to plenty of high-tech options such as Active Steering, but the bottom-line price, like the Cayenne's, can really add up.

The interior of the Audi Q7 is much more attractive and upscale-feeling than the 2009 Porsche Cayenne, and it has an available third row of seating, but it drives with more heft than the Cayenne and doesn't handle quite as quickly.

The Infiniti FX is priced significantly lower than the Cayenne, and it feels faster and lighter behind the wheel, with crisp handling and tight body control.

But the FX doesn't have a very comfortable ride at times, and it's rather small inside.

Finally, the most sensible vehicle on this list is the MDX, which has a very nicely appointed, comfortable interior, a smooth ride, and quite good handling, with a sporty feel that's eager and responsive but not trying to be like a sportscar.
